và nhà hoạt động phản chiến

Internationally renowned historian and antiwar activist Ngô Vĩnh Long died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor, Maine on October 12, 2022, at the age of seventy- eight. A professor of History at the University of Maine from 1985 until his death, Dr. Long was a leading scholar of the Vietnam/Indochina War and of the history of Vietnam from ancient times through French colonialism and US neocolonialism, postwar Vietnam, US-Vietnam relations, and Southeast and East Asia, especially China. 

From his undergraduate years at Harvard until the end of his life, Ngô Vĩnh Long was a courageous intellectual activist and an activist intellectual. He often described himself as a proud Vietnamese patriot who cared deeply about Vietnam, its past, and its suffering, as well as about the United States, his second home. Even in the darkest of times, he maintained his vision and hope for a much better Vietnam, a more egalitarian US, and much better US-Vietnam relations. 

Long sometimes described himself and was considered by some others as a pacifist. This is accurate if by “pacifist” we mean an opponent of war and a promoter of peace, reconcilia- tion, and justice. But Professor Long was not the kind of pacifist who would uncompromis- ingly and openly condemn all expressions of violence, such as those exerted by Vietnamese anti-colonial and anti-imperialist revolutionaries, who were not always nonviolent in their struggles for freedom and independence. At the same time, he always worked to offer alternatives to violent responses to oppression, exploitation, and domination. 

Much of Ngô Vĩnh Long’s scholarly and activist priorities and commitments can be traced back to formative influences in his family upbringing and his youthful experiences in Vietnam. These influences and experiences shaped his commitment to speak truth to power. From his youth until the end of his life, Long was profoundly moved by the human-caused suffering of Vietnamese people, which he dedicated his life to alleviating. He believed in providing independent analyses regardless of the personal, career, and other risks he faced from those in Vietnam and in the United States challenged by his interpretations and actions. He had an unshakable commitment to study and educate others about the violent and unjust economic, political, and cultural realities of French colonialism, US neocolonialism, Chinese imperialism, and other expressions of domina- tion in the contemporary world. 

In taking such positions, commitments, and actions, Ngô Vĩnh Long did not live under any illusions. He fully expected, and accepted, the negative consequences of his beliefs on his personal life, intellectual development, and professional career. 

In taking such strong and courageous personal and intellectual positions, Long gained a reputation that was sometimes revealing, but also one-sided and misleading. The head- line for his obituary in The New York Times reported that he was a “lightning rod for opposing the Vietnam War.” His obituary in The Boston Globe stated that he was “a scholar of Vietnam attacked for his views about war.” One could easily conclude from these and other publications that Ngô Vĩnh Long was an uncompromising intellectual who created controversy. 

However, this perspective of Long is misleading because it does not address the key question: who considered him a lightning rod and an enemy? Ngô Vĩnh Long was very welcoming, unpretentious, kind, warm, and hospitable. He was very generous with his time when it came to his students, colleagues, and fellow scholars of Vietnam and Asia, including those with whom he disagreed. In relating to himself and to others, he expressed a great sense of humor, especially in his tendency to subject others to endless puns, many of which he recognized as really corny, as he laughed at himself. This more complex perspective offers a more insightful view of the vision and legacy of Long as an exemplary intellectual.

An Thuy Nguyen (Nguyễn Thùy An) là một nghiên cứu sinh tiến sĩ ngành sử học tại đại học Maine, Hoa Kỳ, nơi cô sẽ bảo vệ luận án của mình được dự trù vào tháng 4 này. Chuyên môn của cô là về lịch sử đối ngoại và quan hệ ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ, lịch sử nước này trong thế kỷ 20, lịch sử Việt Nam và phụ nữ học. Luận án của cô tìm hiểu ý nghĩa và hệ quả của học thuyết Nixon tại châu Á từ góc nhìn của những nhà hoạt động phản chiến ở miền Nam Việt Nam. Cô là tác giả của một bài báo trên tạp chí nghiên cứu, một chương sách về nguyên Phó chủ tịch nước Nguyễn Thị Bình, hai bài giới thiệu sách và một vài bài tham luận khác. An cũng là dịch giả và người biên tập cho một dự án sách về chiến tranh Đông Dương lần thứ nhất và dịch giả cho một phim tài liệu về chiến tranh Việt Nam. Cô nhận được các học bổng nghiên cứu Moore Research Fellowship của Thư viện Hoà bình thuộc Đại học Swarthmore, Marilyn Young Dissertation Fellowhsip của Hiệp hội Sử gia về Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ, các học bổng nghiên cứu của Đại học Maine và nhiều giải thưởng khác. Douglas Allen là Giáo sư danh dự về Triết học tại Đại học Maine. Ông là tác giả và đồng tác giả với vai trò biên tập của mười tám cuốn sách và hơn 150 chương sách và bài báo, bao gồm Gandhi sau ngày 11/9 : Bất bạo động sáng tạo và bền vững (Nxb Đại học Oxford, 2019). Là một học giả-nhà hoạt động vì hòa bình và công lý, Allen đã tích cực trong phong trào dân quyền, cuộc vận động tranh cử ở Việt Nam, phong trào phản chiến, phong trào chống phân biệt chủng tộc và nhiều cuộc đấu tranh khác chống lại bạo lực, chiến tranh, bóc lột giai cấp, chủ nghĩa đế quốc, áp bức chủng tộc và giới tính, và hủy hoại môi trường. Năm 2022, ông biên tập hai tập của bộ sách Triết lý của Mahatma Gandhi và Chiến tranh và Hòa bình trong tôn giáo.
